eom_jan2014_lgCivil Division employee Lourie Matthews is the Employee of the Month for January 2014. Mrs. Matthews joined the Sheriff's Office in May 1990. She has worked in various sections of the Sheriff's Office namely Movables/Garnishments, Docket and currently Real Estate Foreclosures. She is assigned to seize real estate properties and create auction notices to serve on the litigants involved in these cases. She has also assisted in training new employees. Mrs. Matthew's understanding of the seizure process is a great asset to the Real Estate Section. Her supervisor, Mrs. B. Douglas, says that Mrs. Matthews is a very cooperative worker and is well informed when providing information to potential bidders at the auction.

Mrs. Matthews says that she enjoys working real estate and plans to continue to give her best to the Sheriff's Office.

Are you interested in purchasing a foreclosed property at a Sheriff's auction? Do you have questions about the bidding process or how to pay for a winning bid?

Get answers from the experts at Sheriff Gusman's next Real Estate Foreclosure Seminar taking place at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29 at the Civil District Court Building, 421 Loyola Ave., in Room 319 (old jury pool room).

Sheriff Marlin N. Gusman will give a presentation on the foreclosure process, and lead a panel discussion on buying foreclosed properties at a Sheriff's auction. The panelists are:

  • Robert A. Mathis, partner at Newman, Mathis, Brady & Spedale
  • Jonah Freedman, attorney and certified financial planner
  • Tammie Jackson, deputy city attorney and deputy director of code enforcement
  • Matt Toups, abstractor and court runner for Dean Morris Law Firm
  • Jonathan Wallick, real estate developer/third-party purchaser
  • Ronald Ward, real estate broker/third-party purchaser

Sheriff Gusman will also offer tips on how homeowners can avoid foreclosure.
